Failure, Nu Labour and the Lib Dems

It's exactly a year since I blogged the world with my thoughts on the Scottish elections of May 2007.

Now I'm at it again.

Nu Labour/ Owld Torie (The Scottish New Labour Party, a Unionist party)) are is such a mess with Wee Windy and Team Aliexander, Noddy Stephen's is still doing his 'Miss Piggy' for the FibDems (Liberal Democratic Party, a Unionist party) and Miss Nanabel Goldie, is hoping she can make the Nu Tories (The Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party, their name says it all) a force in Scotland

Whilst the wee green meennies (The Green Party, a strange party), are savouring their apparent 'influence' in budget setting, Not to forget the Edinburgh Boudicca aka Big Margo (Margo McDonald, an Independent Nationalist) the champeen o’ a’ things Reekie!

Well, you may ask, what has this got to do with the Scottish Elections?

The answer is fairly straight forward.

The Scottish National Party (SNP), under the leadership of Alex Salmond, won enough of the votes last year, to enable them to form a Government, unfortunately, although they were the largest single party, they did not have an overall majority.

What with all the Unionist parties ranging against them, a coalition Government for the benefit of the citizens of this wonderful country, was out of reach. However with the aid of the other minority parties and independents, Alex Salmond was elected as Prime Minister* of the Scottish parliament.

Eight months have now passed, and the funding settlement from the Westminster government has duly been announced, a figure which is below that which was expected. This has caused, problems for the SNP administration, in as much that some of their manifesto promises can’t be delivered, in this year of the Parliament (although factors, such as the Edinburgh Tram Link, costing in excess of half a billion GBP for a single track tramway, which will probably not relieve the congestion on Edinburghs' roads.

So after some discussion with ‘interested Parties’ , namely, The Greens, Scottish Tories and Big Margo, the first Budget by a non Unionist Government in Scotland for over 300 years is to be voted on today at Holyrood. Because of the anti-Independence stance of the Unionist parties, and their proclivity to sycophantically pander to their London based masters, The Scottish Prime Minister, Alex Salmond, has intimated that if his budget is defeated then he will resign. Many see this as an ‘empty threat’ as it is expected that the Conservatives will back his governments’ budget, along with the Greens and Big Margo, thereby given him the necessary majority.

My own view, however, is that since coming to power in May, the Westminster government and the London based Unionist Parties have done everything the could to destabilise the elected Scottish government. (The biggest culprit being Prime Minister Brown, former Prime Minister Blair and their cohorts at Westminster, so petty are this band of ne'er do wells, that PM Blair could not even lift the telephone to congratulate PM Salmond on his victory (what a petty little man))

Mr Salmond is now saying to those agitators and ne'er do wells, that if you block this, you then can go to the country, to explain to the citizens, why you have blocked this budget by the duly elected government of Scotland.

This may be oversimplified, but the Scottish Parliamentary system requires, that should the First (Prime ) Minister resign or his Party loose control of the chamber, then a new First (Prime) Minister must be elected from within the Parliament no later than 28 days after the said resignation. If this is not accomplished, then another Scottish Parliamentary Election is held.

Quite good tactics, as the people of Scotland are quite annoyed with the previous New Labour/Owld Torie administration, who are now imploding due to the rancid stench of electoral fraud, illegal donations and incompetence. It then would take a seismic shift in attitudes towards New Labour for them to retain the seats they already have let alone gain more to put themselves in a position to form a government.

If Mr Salmond loses the vote, which I think highly unlikely, then the main beneficiary would be the SNP, as the good people of Scotland, would rightly perceive, that this immoral and bankrupt force, known as Scottish New Labour, are indeed only interest in their liege lords in Westminster's bidding and not the well being of this wonderful and beautiful country of ours. Scotland will not forget!!!

*Under the terms of the Scotland Act, the correct title is FIRST Minister, this was insisted on by the English Prime Minister Tony Blair, who insisted that as it was only a 'Parish Council’ and not a proper government it can’t have a ‘Prime ‘ Minister. (what a pathetic, criminal, obdurate, niggardly , self centred and wholly disreputable little man!!)

Winter Festivities

Merry Xmas to all you Guys n' Gals out there Open-mouthed

Yeah it's that time of year again, 'Winter Festivities' time. Party

Well the turkey is well and truly finished, along with the Roast Tatties, Cranberry Sauce, Brussels and Plum Duff!!!

Sick

Family and friends all being suitably 'stuffed and watered' all that is left to do now is get ready for the Real Winter FEAST!!!!

Which is known in my area as Hogmanay and around the world as New Years Eve however more of that later.

Nerd

It has been my custom for a few years now, to have a few close friends round on Boxing Day for a 'Turkey Free' bite to eat along with some good wine, music and general warmhearted banter, however last year everyone was so 'hung-over' from Christmas day, it was more like the waiting room of the Doctors Surgery, than a gathering of 'Turkey Dinner Escapees'.

With most of us nursing 'sair heids' etc; the conversation was muted, to say the least. Sick

So this year, with popular consent. I moved the get-together to last night (Friday 28th),the guests duly arrived at 8 pm, where upon they proceeded to quaff large quantities of red wine, rose wine and ale, as was their wont. The juke box was switched on to provide soothing background music, not loud enough to drown out conversation, but loud enough to cover up, those awful pregnant silences that always happens at any gathering of erstwhile libatious characters.

During the proceedings, my eldest son telephoned to wish me a Merry Christmas (again), however the connection appeared to get 'broke' so the conversation was quick and to the point, (if your reading this Leon, I'll phone later today Sat, if your reading after Saturday, I've already phoned you ) Eye-rolling

So Chris, Brian, Maureen, Ann, Jim, Ian, Dave, John and myself continued as we were going on before.

Food Time!!! Tongue out

Drifting in gastronomic limbo, from the shock of so many turkey dinners, I had prepared a veritable feast of:

Roast Silverside with a mustard Crust, along with A Smoked Gammon with a Mustard and Ginger Glaze and an Unsmoked Gammon with an Apple and Sage Glaze, all served with Roast Potatoes, roasted chestnuts, sprouts and a rich red wine and onion gravy.

Which my fellow travellers appeared to enjoy immensely, given that they completely demolished 4Kg ( 9lbs) of meat amongst them.

This was followed by two types of Traditional Home Made Scottish Trifle, one without topping, for the figure conscious, and one with for the rest of us, there was also one of my 'famous' 'Deep Filled Mince Pies' which contains 2lb of 'mincemeat' encapsulated in a light short crust pastry cooked in a 'Frisbee' Pie Dish, these were 'topped off' with a choice of dressings, Irish Whiskey flavoured Cream and/or Cointreau flavoured Cream. This seemed to go down well as there ain't much left!

So suitably stuffed, we continued with the reduction of the combined wine and ale stock, which we acquitted ourselves reasonably well on, as I survey the aftermath in the kitchen this morning (cases full of recycle material of both the Glass Bottle and Aluminium Can Genres).

As the clock approached 2 am, everyone being mindful (and by this time booze-full also) that the big day (or night) is but 3 days away, my guests started to wish me ae fond farewell and headed for their own little piece of 'God's Country', that we all call Scotia.

So all that is left now to do is tidy up the front room, wash and polish the glasses (thanks to the guy that invented 'paper' plates only the cuttlery requires cleaning Hot), and go for a curer to my local later and see how many of them have got out of bed yet.

Anyhow Monday is Hogmanay, the real Winter Festival, in God's Country, which I shall be celebrating with a few friends at our local 'social' club, followed possibly, by a wee sojourn to somebody's hoose to 'round off' the festivities, so if I don't see you then or before,

I wish you all A Very Happy And Prosperous 2008, and while you are raising your glass to celebrate, also raise it in remembrance of good friends we've lost along the way.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE and may your God go with you

A Nation In Waiting?

A Short History of one of the oldest National Flags in the World, even older than the Flag of England!!!

According to legend, in 832 A.D. King Óengus (II) (or King Angus) led the Picts and Scots in battle against the Angles under King Aethelstan of East Anglia near modern-day Athelstaneford in East Lothian. King Angus and his men were surrounded and he prayed for deliverance from his terrible enemy Athelstan. During the night, Saint Andrew, who was martyred on a saltire cross, appeared to Angus and assured him of victory. On the following morning a white saltire against the background of a blue sky appeared to both sides. The Picts and Scots were heartened by this, but the Angles bottled out and were defeated.

Elated by his victory over Athelstane, King Angus decreed that 'fae noo til thon tyme when a' thi deid raise oan thon dae o' jujemente, then wul thi Crosce o' St. Andrew oan the blu o' thi skye  be thi lawfu' flag o' a thi Scots'

This saltire design has been the Scottish flag ever since.

Material evidence of the saltire's use dates from somewhat later. In 1385 the Parliament of Scotland decreed that Scottish soldiers should wear the saltire as a distinguishing mark. The earliest surviving Scottish flag consisting solely of the saltire dates from 1503: a white cross on a red background. By 1540 the legend of King Angus had been altered to include the vision of the crux decussata against a blue sky. Thereafter, this saltire design in its present form became the national flag of Scotland.

Flag of Scotland

The National Flag of Scotland, or 'The St. Andrews Flag', or 'The Saltire'.

More on the History of Scotland to follow.
